Standing Seam Metal vs Shingles: Cost and Lifespan

Standing seam runs roughly $10 to $16 per square foot installed in California and lasts 40 to 70 years. Asphalt shingle runs $4 to $8 and lasts 15 to 30. So metal costs two to three times more today and lasts two to three times longer. Which one is right for your house depends on your framing, your slope, and how long you intend to own it.

The coastal part matters more here than it does in most of the country. What does each one cost per square foot?

Standing seam is two to three times the price of architectural shingle, and the published ranges are wide enough that a single number would mislead you.

Clean Roofing’s California pricing guide, updated 29 July 2026, puts steel standing seam at $10 to $16 per square foot installed, and aluminium standing seam at $8 to $15. That figure includes tear-off, underlayment, and standard permitting. Weather Shield’s June 2026 guide puts standing seam at $10 to $18 and architectural asphalt shingle at $4 to $8.

The spread gets wider still once national surveys are included. Global Home’s May 2026 guide cites This Old House 2026 survey data at $8 to $39 per square foot, with most quality residential work landing between $14 and $25. That is not sloppy reporting. Some of those numbers price the panel and some price the finished job, and the two are not the same thing.

Every figure on this page is a published typical range with its source named. A real price for your house comes after somebody measures the actual surface area, which on a pitched roof is always larger than the floor area.

How long does each one last here?

Metal lasts 40 to 70 years and shingle lasts 15 to 30, and San Diego treats the two differently.

Weather Shield’s June 2026 guide gives standing seam 40 to 70 years against 15 to 30 for asphalt. It cites longevity data from the National Roofing Contractors Association and the Cool Metal Roofing Coalition. Clean Roofing’s July 2026 California guide agrees on the 40-to-70 figure. It adds something useful about this state. California’s ultraviolet load works in metal’s favour, because metal does not break down under sunlight the way asphalt does.

That is the part a national comparison misses. Here the sun is the main thing ageing a surface, not freeze and thaw. A south-facing or west-facing slope in Encinitas takes a heavier ultraviolet load than the same slope in a wetter, cloudier state, and asphalt is the material that minds it. What does the forty-year picture look like?

Over forty years you buy one metal surface or two to three shingle ones, which is where the price gap closes.

Take the cheque you write today out of it for a moment. A standing seam surface installed now, at 40 to 70 years of published service life, is very likely the last one that house needs. An asphalt surface at 15 to 30 years is not, and the second installation will not cost what the first one did.

There are two smaller numbers that go the same direction. Metal carries a Class A fire rating, which matters in California wildfire zones. The Metal Roofing Alliance figure, cited by both Clean Roofing and Weather Shield, puts cooling cost reduction at 10 to 40 percent. A reflective surface does not push as much heat into the space below it.

None of that changes the fact that metal is the larger cheque today. It changes what the larger cheque buys.

When are shingles still the right call?

When you are not staying, when the framing or slope argues against metal, or when the budget is the actual constraint.

If the house is being sold in a few years, the forty-year argument belongs to somebody else. A sound shingle surface passes inspection and does the job, and the difference between the two cheques stays in your pocket.

Budget counts too, and pretending otherwise is how homeowners get talked into work they cannot comfortably afford. A metal surface you cannot pay for is worse than the shingle one you can. Standing seam is also a specialty installation. Weather Shield notes labour runs half to sixty per cent of the total, and not every roofer can do it properly. A badly installed metal surface is not a bargain at any price.

There is a middle option worth knowing about. Clean Roofing’s July 2026 figures put stone-coated steel and metal shingles at $8 to $15 per square foot, with a 40 to 70 year life. Does a metal roof make the house louder in rain?

Not on a properly built one. Standing seam sits on a solid deck with underlayment beneath it, not on open framing like a barn. The sound most people picture comes from panels over battens with nothing underneath. On a house with a deck and attic space, the difference against shingle is small.

Which metal should a house near the beach use?

Can metal go over an existing shingle roof?

Sometimes, but it is a decision made after somebody checks the deck and the framing, not before. The weight, the condition of what is underneath, and the local permit rules all bear on it. An overlay that traps a wet deck underneath buys a problem rather than solving one.

Does a metal roof help with solar panels?

It can. Standing seam panels accept clamps that grip the raised seam, so mounts do not need to be bolted through the surface. Fewer holes through a waterproof layer means fewer places for water to enter later. The panel layout and the seam spacing still have to agree.
