Why do the published numbers disagree so much?

Because some of them price the panel and some price the finished job, and almost nobody says which.

The This Old House survey range cited by Global Home runs from $8 to $39 per square foot, with most quality residential work landing between $14 and $25. A spread that wide is not carelessness. It is what happens when panel-only quotes, snap-lock jobs, and full architectural systems all get averaged into one number.

Labour is the other half of it. Weather Shield puts labour at half to sixty per cent of the total for standing seam. Angi, drawing on United States Bureau of Labor Statistics data, puts it at $2 to $6 per square foot nationally. Clean Roofing adds $3 to $8 per square foot for California. Standing seam is a specialty. Not every roofer can do it, and the ones who can are not the cheapest hour on the job.

What changes the number most?

The metal, the panel system, the gauge, and whatever is found when the old surface comes off.

Is aluminium worth the extra near the coast?
